Following the cliffhanger, Pope manages to escape by cutting the ropes with shards of glass. That night at dinner, Ben presents as agitated and unwilling to eat. Ricky ambiguously foreshadows that Terry and his group are untrustworthy. Later, Mike searches the barn and discovers a series of backpacks and clothing left behind, and is confronted by Terry revealing his nefarious Faustian bargain. Terry attempted to turn Mike and encourage him to join the Sanctuary. In the wee hours, Mike warns Hal and the rest of the group. Hal devises a simply yet hasty plan: Hal leads the children back while Mike provides suppressive fire to allow Hal to gain time and momentum. Ultimately, while the detachment is on the run, a lone gunshot is heard and Ben reacts, as if he ‘felt the gunshot’. Meanwhile, Tom begins to suspect something has gone awry in two parts: first, the squad from the 2nd Mass has not returned and the 3rd Mass did not link up with Tom and his squad. The next day, Hal makes a judgment call to rest in a suburban home while sending Ben as a runner to inform on Terry and his group. Terry and his men discover the location of the children and before he and his men can commence an assault of the house, Pope fires from the tree line, killing one of Terry’s men. A firefight ensues, wounding Pope in the leg, yet causing Tom to emerge from the deep forest and strike a compromise with Terry. Tom agreed to surrender himself, Hal and the children if Terry would discuss ‘terms’ upon return to the sanctuary. Terry leads both groups into an ambush lead by Weaver. Although Terry’s men are immediately subdued, Terry’s treachery causes himself to be killed by Tom. Sarah, gives birth to the first baby girl, Charlotte, born into the 2nd Mass. Reg. during the Skitter occupation. Tom checks in on Pope healing from his gunshot wound. Although Tom is frustrated, he forgives Pope’s indiscretions in return for offering him his job back as a cook. A funeral is held for Mike with Hal giving a speech about Mike's bravery. Lourdes sings a hymn, while Margaret holds Hal’s hand. Mike’s funeral and Charlotte’s birth scenes are essential events in the episode as they form the ‘circle of life’ in the history of mankind. After the funeral disperses, Ricky turns to Ben and says “(the Skitters)...would never kill one of our own," advising Ben that, "You should understand this." This line forms the capstone belief, Ricky is still “connected” but fails to demonstrate the length and boundaries of this connection.
